Raw food: pros and cons

In recent times more people have warmed to the idea of eating raw food, and the good news is that doing so can have several health benefits.

In fact, some people choose to go on fully-fledged raw food diets, because they believe doing so leads to increased energy, improved skin appearance, weight loss, better digestion and reduced risk of heart disease.

If you base your diet around eating raw foods you will almost certainly eat less saturated and trans fats than in a typical daily diet.

You will also be full of fibre, potassium, magnesium and folate.

Your focus will be on unprocessed foods, and your main options include:

Nuts
Fresh fruit and vegetables
Seeds
Beans
Legumes
Grains
Seaweed
Dried fruit

You can add twists to these foods, for example by juicing fresh veggies and fruit.

There are a couple of things to be careful of, because you may risk becoming deficient in the following:

Calcium
Iron
Protein
B12
Calories

Because these are important elements in any person’s diet, you need to find a way to supplement and incorporate them.

Raw food has some great natural benefits but be wary of cutting out other nutrients.
